Originating in the Sahara, a heatwave is sweeping across southern Europe, with record temperatures forecast for the Mediterranean region.
The death toll for the summer of 2022, the hottest ever recorded in Europe, was more than 61,000, according to a study published on 10 July in the journal Nature Medicine. The first-of-its-kind study was jointly conducted by scientists from Inserm (the French National Institute of Health) and the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), who measured mortality directly attributable to heatwaves.
