EU leaders said again to Theresa May that there could be no renegotiation of the Brexit deal agreed in November, as British prime minister asked her partners for further assurances about the so called “backstop”, the plan to keep the UK within the customs union until a solution is found to avoid a hard border in Ireland.
May made the journey to Brussels on 14 December after it became clear that she did not have a majority to endorse the Brexit deal in the House of Commons. The situation is now on a deadlock, with hard brexiteers within her Conservative party aiming for a “hard Brexit” and Remainers from both the Tories and Labour calling for a second referendum.
