The Kremlin on Monday declined to comment on whether the four men accused of committing Friday’s terrorist attack in Moscow had been tortured, after the suspects appeared in court with visible signs of having been beaten.

A Russian court on Sunday ordered pre-trial detention until May 22 for the four men accused of carrying out a mass shooting at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall on Friday, in which nearly 140 people were killed and more than 180 people injured. They have been charged with committing a terrorist act.

Videos and pictures of the four men in court show the suspects with evident signs of injury, including bruises, swollen faces and bandages. One of them, who was barely conscious, was brought in in a wheelchair. Another had a dressing covering his ear, after social media footage showed Russian security officials cutting it off.
