Vilnius Summit: ‘EU will pressure Ukraine to the end’

Ukrainian demonstrators waving Ukrainian and European flags took to the streets of Lithuania demanding that President Yanukovych sign an association agreement with the EU.

“They are not as impressive as the tens of thousands of activists in Kiev’s Independence Square,” but they are nonetheless present outside the Palace of the Grand Dukes in Vilnius, which is the venue for the third Eastern partnership summit, points out Trouw.

Even though a signature is unlikely in the wake of the refusal announced by the Ukraine on November 21, some European leaders still believe that Kiev will change its mind, points out the daily —

Before the dinner, Commission President [José Manuel] Barroso and European Council President [Herman] Van Rompuy spoke with Yanukovych, who has been avoiding the press. Perhaps the two EU leaders will convince him with additional promises to sign the agreements at a later date.
