Ukraine: ‘What will unite Ukrainians after the Maïdan?‘

by host

Den looks back on a week of pro-European protests in public squares (Maïdan in Ukrainian) in several cities in Ukraine, following the Kiev government’s rejection of an association agreement proposed by the EU.

“There is no risk of falling into depression!” remarks the newspaper, because the “EvroMaïdany” (the “EuroSquares”) “have shown that Ukrainians know how to organise and take action for change.”

Den voices optimism for Ukraine’s future, citing the examples of the Prague Spring and the Solidarity movement in Poland, and points out that —

… even after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe was marked by a phase of rebellion which preceded the advent of civil society.”
