Home Politics Pedro Sánchez publishes PhD thesis to rebut plagiarism claims

The Spanish government published the PhD thesis of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to rebut allegations of plagiarism, El País reported.

Sánchez was first accused of copying parts of his economics thesis — which has never been cited in the academic literature — on Tuesday. Health Minister Carmen Montón was forced to resign when press reports emerged that she had plagiarized parts of her masters thesis.

On Friday, the government presented an analysis using two plagiarism detection programs — Turnitin and PlagScan — claiming that the prime minister’s academic work “amply passed” both. The government published the thesis in full online.

Spanish newspaper El País ran the programs again, along with a third, and came to the same conclusion.

Until Friday, the thesis was not available to the public online — but only in hard copy at the private university where he taught — leading to accusations of plagiarism by the opposition and demands for it to be published.

The Spanish Prime Minister wrote on Facebook that he was “proud of his university thesis. They won’t smear what cost me so much effort.”
