Merkel ‘carries her own shopping bags,’ says supermarket boss

BERLIN — German Chancellor Angela Merkel gets “no special treatment” when she shops at her local store, the boss of supermarket chain Ullrich said in an interview published Saturday.

Merkel has been a regular visitor at the Mohrenstraße branch — close to the agriculture and labor ministries and a 15-minute walk from the Bundestag — for years, Gert Schambach told Tagesspiegel.

The chancellor “always carries her own bags,” he said, adding: “Let’s put it this way: She is an absolute regular customer and when she’s on a mission abroad, her husband comes.”

The supermarket’s meat counter was the scene of a photo opp with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang during an official visit in 2014.
