When Pope Francis visits Ireland this weekend, it will be the first papal visit to the country for almost 40 years.

That’s a long time between trips for a country that’s one of the most Catholic in Europe.

But a lot has changed since Pope John Paul II touched down in September 1979. Here’s a look at Catholicism in Ireland and differing attitudes to religion in the country over time.
