Iran admits providing drones to Russia but denies involvement in Ukraine

Iran admitted providing Russia with drones that are suspected to have been used to target civilian infrastructure and power plants in Ukraine, but Tehran maintained that the equipment was supplied before Russia launched its invasion in February.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Saturday said that a few drones had been delivered to Russia before Moscow’s troops crossed the border with Ukraine in late February, according to a report by government-affiliated news agency IRNA. He denied that more drones had been supplied since the invasion.

“We provided Russia a small number of drones months before the Ukraine war,” the IRNA report quoted him as saying.

Russia denies having used the Iranian Shahed-136 drones in its attacks on Ukraine.

Amirabdollahian said Iran “won’t remain indifferent” if the use of Iranian drones in the Ukrainian conflict were to be proven.

He claimed that his offer to Kyiv to discuss the allegations and provide evidence was eventually scuppered by the Ukrainians, who pulled out of an agreed meeting.
