Boris the media tycoon? Former PM tapped up for top UK newspaper job

The Telegraph, a favorite read of Conservative supporters, is up for sale after the House of Lords effectively blocked a bid from the United Arab Emirates-backed RedBird IMI fund to buy up the paper.

But Sky reported that Johnson has spoken to his former top finance minister, Nadhim Zahawi, about a post-government job at Britain’s main right-wing broadsheet. Zahawi is reported to be in talks to organize finance for a £600 million bid for the paper and the Spectator magazine.

A spokesperson for Johnson declined to comment. Zahawi did not respond to a request for comment.

Johnson wouldn’t be the first top Tory to land a plum media job. If appointed, he would follow in the footsteps of George Osborne, who edited the Evening Standard between 2017 and 2020 after serving as chancellor.
