Boris Johnson promises ‘massive package’ of economic sanctions on Russia

LONDON — U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday promised a “massive package” of economic sanctions that will “hobble” the Russian economy, as he condemned Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

In a televised address Thursday, Johnson said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime will be condemned to “pariah status” for unleashing a “tidal wave of violence against Ukraine.” He did not give any specifics about the new sanctions package against Moscow, though they are expected to be unveiled in a statement to the House of Commons around 5 p.m. local time.

“Russia has attacked a friendly country without any provocation or without any credible excuse,” Johnson said. “I say to the Ukrainians in this moment of agony, we are with you. We are praying for you and your families, and we are on your side.”

Johnson said the U.K. government will now consider what further assistance it can provide to Ukraine, amid calls from some of his own MPs to send aerial support.

He insisted Western allies must “also collectively cease the dependence on Russian oil and gas that for too long has given Putin his grip on Western politics.”

Describing Russia’s invasion as a “hideous and barbaric venture of Vladimir Putin,” Johnson said the West will work with Ukraine “for however long it takes, to ensure that the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine is restored.”

“For all his bombs and tanks and missiles, I don’t believe the Russian dictator will ever subdue the national feeling of the Ukrainians and their passionate belief that their country should be free,” he said.
